Attn: Professional closed captioners
I am currently seeking professional captioners who would be willing to be interviewed by me on Skype about their captioning experiences. Participants must have at least one year of experience with prerecorded/offline captioning. I am interested in how captioners make decisions, how they put style guidelines into practice, how they check for quality, and how they caption non-speech information. The interviews will take place on Skype (or some other computer-based synchronous method if it’s more convenient for participants). Participants will need access to the web during the interview to watch one or more video examples.
All names of interview participants and companies will be replaced with pseudonyms in any publications that result from this research but I will gladly share or discuss any published results with participants and captioning companies.
Each interview will last 45-60 minutes. Each participant will receive a $20 Walmart gift card.
I am a tenured professor at Texas Tech University. I have received approval from my university’s human subjects review board to conduct these interviews.
If you are interested in being interviewed, please contact me by email (firstname.lastname@example.org). I started interviewing subjects in September 2011 and hope to complete interviews by January 2012. I’d also be happy to answer any questions you have.
Please feel free to forward this request to any professional captioners you know who have at least one year of experience with prerecorded/offline captioning.
